In her play, which is a coproduction between Polski Theatre in Bydgoszcz and Powszechny Theatre in Łódź, Maja Kleczewska revisits the work of one of the greatest contemporary novelists and playwrights, Elfriede Jelinek. The play by the Austrian Nobel Prize-winner, with a slightly autobiographical touch, is a bitter settling of scores with a world governed by patriarchal norms. Great waves of words flow over the audience, representing an attempt to face the passing of time and the process of fading away, made by an artist whose language skills are unique and breathtaking. The director follows the dense, dark and merciless Jelinek discourse, which this time leads to the interior of an Austrian cellar, where female victims are released after years of captivity during which they were raped and beaten by sadistic men. But a society tired of ongoing media coverage of suffering and pain doesn’t want to listen to their stories, partially blaming them for their own misery. Kleczewska creates a vivid stage collage of unusual characters who speak in fierce, razor-sharp monologues written by Jelinek. They range from teddy toys to porn stars, from housewives to crazies, from pop-culture icons to the Austrian artist herself, who appears in the finale of the show. They are all prophets of a world falling to pieces not just because of hypocrisy and cynicism, but also because traditional social and cultural norms and values have long lost their validity. Now, it is only a matter of time before we all go insane.
