This diploma performance by graduates of the Acting Department, directed by Paweł Świątek under the artistic supervision of Adam Nawojczyk, is an adaptation of a piece by one of the most acclaimed playwrights of all time, Jean Genet. This seldom-staged drama reveals the mechanisms behind racial oppression. Świątek, following in Genet’s steps, plays with racist stereotypes about the titular Blacks, who decide to put on a show to entertain the Whites. This outwardly comical farce harbors disturbing concepts and themes that turn the traditional social order upside down. The Blacks brings up questions about the thin line between nature and culture, freedom and enslavement and last but not least – whites and blacks.
