On the Niemen based on the novel by Eliza Orzeszkowa directed by Jędrzej Piaskowski became one of the most important theatrical events of the tough year 2020. No one would expect that the positivist set text would live to inspire a performance that is so tender and ironic, true to the message of the novel and yet so modern in its distance to it. We talk to Jędrzej Piaskowski and dramatist Hubert Sulima about how this “show for the nation”, as the authors call it, was being born, about staging classics without the necessity to rewrite it and about the third way between respect for tradition and plunging into experiment.
