Eliza Orzeszkowa published the book version of On the Niemen exactly 25 years after the outbreak of the January Uprising. The background for the novel is the history of two noble families living side by side: the moderately wealthy Korczyńscy and impoverished Bohatyrowicze, who live like peasants. They are divided by nearly everything: lifestyle, social status and financial standing, but they are united by the common past – their fight side by side for a better, free Poland; an era of great, shared dreams ended by the fall of the uprising. Another national disaster not only broke the lives of several generations of Poles, but also for many years to come shattered the dreams of ideas that the uprising carried on its banners – democracy, equality and solidarity. Against this background the love story of Justyna and Jan, the youngest generation of both families, unfolds.
Like the novel, Jędrzej Piaskowski's and Hubert Sulima's production is not a naturalistic historical document, but rather a kind of patriotic fairytale, a dream of a new social community that is created on stage. The source of inspiration for constructing this fantasy is Orzeszkowa's insightful look at nature, to whom the author devotes much attention, as if she was looking for an answer or for rescue in it, as well as countryside and broadly understood folk culture, including the value system based on the cult of work, living in accordance with the order of nature and Christian ethos.
