Thirteen years ago Krzysztof Warlikowski put Hanoch Levin’s “Krum” to stage at the TR Warszawa in a repertoire breakthrough. In the place of tragedies from Shakespeare and antiquity, he presented the midlife crisis of a contemporary anti-hero and the birth of the artist in a grotesque form at times verging on a soap opera.

By juxtaposing Levin’s plays, and Tadeusz Kantor’s “I Shall Never Return”, Warlikowski created an emotional tale of himself and his peers and actors, and on how he and the audience grapple with time. The only fixed and constant point in the precarious reality is the funeral home, from where a coffins with successive protagonists flow into nonexistence, reminiscent of Charon’s boat. This lets the audience pray Rest in Peace during that “eight-funeral mourners’ comedy”. All that is left of people are cabinets full of souvenirs and mementos, and imperfect funeral speeches. The drama takes place in Israel, yet the perspective is Polish. An actress who left Poland recalls that all the audience advised her to do so. Watching “Krum”, they could enjoy modernity or the prospect of changing, whether a partner, job, country, gender. Now they stop believing that homeland can be the promised land. Emigration, whether internal or to London, is no solution. There is no system that would relieve us from ourselves. Warlikowski’s protagonists are slaves with passports: slaves of their own past and of the country’s history, of failed relationships, unhappy families, depression, and transience. There is no place to escape to, also because the world that wants to be trendy and forces us into Hollywood selfie-style smiles ever more often turns into a global TV studio with incessant coverage of funerals. That’s why it is worthwhile to remain yourself, eat life with a small spoon, and relish its every flavour.
