In the second premiere of 2018, Michał Borczuch drew inspiration from a text by a Chilean playwright Alejandro Moreno Jashés, who changes our everyday perspective on the world, turning the eyeballs inwards, into the body, as he notices that “people never consider this, as this sounds eerie: bodies are dark inside. There is no light inside our organisms.”
The internal darkness is bound to a psychological condition, schizophrenia, or perhaps altered states of conscience that are being explored in an unconventional form called “an experiment” run by “a research team” composed of Kraków actors.
This time Borczuch, known for disclosing the truth about the human and the world in places and environments considered “abnormal”, recorded the multimedia part of his production on the premises of the Kraków psychiatric hospital in Kobierzyn, after meetings and conversations with former patients. So as not to fall for the air of pretentious psychoanalysis and implausible stylised trauma, he breaks up the illusion of travelling into the darkness of the lives of the patients and hospital.
Every malady is a mad play of awareness, while the “research team” operating in the darkened room run their experiment among the audience. They move between us groping in the dark, taking a distance to the life’s and theatre’s revelations and stumbles. Can’t what we see outside and inside be both truth and illusion?
