DURATION

60 min.

Marek and Marcin Chlanda, father and son artists and creators of installations and performances, reflect upon the idea of school and its determinants in this project, which premiered at the Genius Loci Festival. Taking school as a specific, material space with classrooms, desks and chairs as their point of departure, the artists present a utopian vision of an institution that can typically be highly oppressive for students and teachers, children and adults alike. An intergenerational clash of opinions, imaginations and ways of working guides the audience on a journey through school memories as well as physical corridors and hallways. Visitors to this installation, presented in an abandoned wing of a former electrical engineering school in Nowa Huta, are presented with the results of a one-year artist residency. The study in utopian thinking that happens here—as well as the walk through artists’ studios and the physical, historical presence of the location—all contribute to a unique experience that has little to do with any traditional understanding of  school.
