The thesis play by students in the vocal-acting track in the Acting Department of the Kraków Theatre Arts Academy, directed by Ewa Kaim, takes the audience on a journey through songs and compositions of a bygone era. The text and music, dramaturgically revised by Włodzimierz Szturc, are drawn from original folk songs from Oskar Kolberg’s collection, as transcribed by Father Władysław Sierkowski. This magical vocal and theatrical exploration discovers the titular primal sounds, rhythms and melodies, bringing to life a soundtrack of extreme emotions and liminal situations such as birth, death and marriage. Seemingly simple rhythmic arrangements are literally and metaphorically embodied by the young performers, who become vehicles for the ritualized sounds. But the stories told through specific melodies aren’t the main focus here; rather, it’s the unique sonic landscape, which gradually ceases to feel archaic compared to modern reality.
