A thesis performance by students of the Kraków Theatre Arts Academy Acting Department, directed by Agnieszka Glińska, “The Effect” is an adaptation of a drama by distinguished playwright Lucy Prebble. It tells the story of a group of volunteers undergoing tests at a clinic to evaluate the efficacy of a new generation of anti-depressants. While the representatives of the pharmaceutical company observe them closely, two of the participants fall for each other. The director and the young actors starring in the play take their cues from Prebble, posing a series of questions about the ethical implications of medical experiments and the price that must be paid for the chemical suppression of emotions. Blurring the lines between the characters’ feelings and medically-induced behaviors, they offer an ambivalent and painfully relevant portrait of the ultimate disease of modern civilization—depression. At the same time, they try to reflect on a possible remedy for the existential fear and anxiety of modern society.
