Grzegorz Wiśniewski’s new piece, based on the play by Simon Stephens, tells the story of a middle-aged woman who decides to leave her London home and embark on a journey back to her hometown. Harper Regan abandons her rebellious teenage daughter and a husband who’s chronically unable to get his professional life together; she heads out on a journey to say goodbye to her dying father. The narrative is a pretext to show the inner transformation of the character, in accordance with the conventions of road stories in literature and movies. Harper’s random encounters and experiences with various characters reveal her misery and desperation to find a solution to issues that have tormented her for years, but also represent a second childhood, an experience of learning how to appreciate simple, everyday life. The director gradually familiarizes the audience with Harper’s inner world, juxtaposing realistic scenes with poetic, dream-like sequences, in the style and aesthetic of the finest works of subjective dramaturgy.
Harper (superbly played by Magda Grąziowska) goes on a journey filled with rich metaphors that don’t afford easy answers or help her to fully find herself. Avoiding the clichés of psychological theatre, Wiśniewski stages her adventures on a cold and sterile set (designed by Mirek Kaczmarek) that suggests a tiled subway station and a hospital waiting room. The character spends lots of time in both of these spaces, without feeling at ease with herself in either. Whatever it might mean, it’s expressed with ironic detachment by the artists behind this emotionally captivating play.
