The Swimming Pool is a diploma play prepared by graduating students under the pedagogical and artistic supervision of Krystian Lupa. The director stages the text by Lars Norén, a Scandinavian playwright, for the second time. Like in the previous version of the show, co-produced by a theatre in Lausanne, the central focus here is on individuals living on the margins of society, the outcasts and misfits manifesting their alienation and inability to follow strict rules and societal norms. In the hall of an abandoned swimming pool building, which becomes a kind of a laboratory of emotions, Lupa gathers characters who are sentenced to social ostracism and isolation in a capitalist society. Prostitutes, drug addicts, alcoholics and homeless people turn into universal figures of solitude expressing the confusion of modern civilization. The audience plays an important part in this performative social experiment initiated by Lupa, since it’s up to them whether change could really happen or not.
