The diploma play for the graduating students of the Acting Department of the Ludwik Solski State Drama School in Wrocław, directed by Weronika Szczawińska, is an adaptation of a canonical novel by Virginia Woolf. The title hero/heroine shifts their gender and shape it over the hundreds of years while the subversive potential of the book turns out to be completely up to date. This tricky biography, juxtaposing historical events with picaresque adventures, becomes an excuse to tell a story of gender itself as well as theatrical conventions that are used to establish it. There are as many as eleven Orlandos in the piece and each and every one of them faces strict cultural norms and expectations when it comes down to the actor’s identity and its basic markers.
