The point of departure for the piece staged by Katarzyna Kalwat is Marta Sokołowska’s play of the same title. But little is left of the original text, which changed quite a bit as it was developed through rehearsals and acting improvisations. The story of Tomasz Sikorski (played by TR Warszawa actor Tomasz Tyndyk), an avant-garde composer considered to be the pioneer of minimalism in music, is full of cracks, contradictions and insinuations. Two performers, Jan Dravnel and Sandra Korzeniak, present drastically different portraits of the artist. In one he is nothing but an aggressive and desperate drunk; in the other he’s simply a misunderstood, unhappy man with a special “gift”. There is also a third voice, which belongs to Zygmunt Krauze (who also stars in “Holzwege”): a friend and collaborator of Sikorski who plays his songs to the audience. Questions posed by the actors to the pianist, and a series of digressions, establish a picture of a lone wolf who gets more and more depressed. Hovering over him is the spectre of death, which most interests the director here, fuelled by the existentialist philosophy he adores and the existential fears that follow him everywhere.
