Jakub Roszkowski stages the action of “The Wedding” by Stanisław Wyspiański in a space resembling an abandoned bar long past its prime. A couple of tables, cigarettes scattered on the floor, deflated balloons, limp streamers and broken alcohol crates are scattered all around the stage. The audience is invited to the party, which is haunted by Chochol and the other ghosts that appear in the original text. All of the thirteen actors from the Andersen Theatre in Lublin carry ghastly-looking, human-sized mannequins on their backs. The dolls cling to the performers’ bodies and gradually take control of the characters. They dance, drink and stumble to the ground with them, then suddenly stand up on their feet. Most of all though, in the symbolic dimension these mannequins make it impossible to break out of an overwhelming stagnation, an atmosphere that overpowers both the depicted world and the play itself.
