Aneta Groszyńska’s performance is based on Jan Czapliński’s play, which actually doesn’t so much familiarize us with one of the most underrated Polish playwrights as show us that we’ll never get to know the real Gabriela Zapolska. The witty actress and author of stage texts is immortalized in the collective national memory mainly for a couple of platitudes taught in Polish language classes. But that’s not the Zapolska found here, and this is not a traditional biographical drama. Instead, the audience observes three alter egos of the artist and episodes from her life, which was most certainly not an easy one, presented in a style far removed from theatrical realism. Trivialised by her contemporaries, struggling with constant financial issues and illness, Zapolska in her plays becomes an advocate for the most marginalized members of society. Unlike her male colleagues, she was not interested in the great machinations behind history, but rather the simple quandaries of average people. In the theatrical version by Groszczyńska and Czapliński it isn’t the feminist cause of canonizing the playwright that’s at stake, but rather a celebration of loss and failure—the main, unofficial life principle of Zapolska, who is portrayed here as a kind of twisted super-heroine.
