First-time director Jakub Skrzywanek adapts a book of reportages by Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich for the Drama Theatre in Wałbrzych. The Bielorussian writer emphasizes that the main idea behind her texts is to capture history through a series of individual stories. In this particular piece, she takes on the decade-long Russian intervention in Afghanistan, describing it from the perspective of nurses, veterans and mothers who await their sons’ bodies to be delivered in the titular zinc coffins. The director approaches his work by initiating a discussion about the cruel mechanisms of war. But he operates in a highly ironic and twisted mode, referencing pacifist slogans and discourses that lead to creating a kind of anti-war musical piece. The songs and para-military choreography, influenced by the conventions of the Army Music Festival, which to a great extent define the form of the play, comment on the phenomenon of seeing everyday reality in terms of war. In the era of the fight against terrorism, the social and political diagnoses of the acclaimed writer and journalist carry even greater meaning and critical gravitas.
