Krzysztof Garbaczewski’s play is an adaptation of the last, unfinished novel by Mirosław Nahacz, “The Unusual Adventures of Robert Robur”. Its action takes place in the future, when the media has taken total control of reality, fabricating information that society blindly believes. Public opinion is shaken, however, by a series of mysterious deaths, and all the clues lead to the protagonist, Robert Robur, a young screenwriter. As revolutionary fervor builds and a group of rebels plots the overthrow of the Office of Energy dictatorship, the audience follows attempts to solve the mysterious murder case. The sensational plot becomes a pretext for the director to play with the conventions of crime novels and science fiction films. Like in the novel, Garbaczewski denounces an oppressive media hegemony and all that’s lost as a consequence of the absolute rule of virtual reality. And things that a decade ago, when the book was written, seemed like nothing but the author’s imagination, today, in the era of “second reality” and the tyranny of the Internet, have taken on extremely sinister and realistic form and meaning.
In “Robert Robur”, serious reflections on the insidious trap that technological progress sets up for us are interwoven with numerous pop-culture games and references. The aesthetic of the depicted world is very much defined by campy exaggeration. Ironic scenes, suggestively performed by the wonderful cast of TR Warszawa, provide the basis for social critique. And playing with cinematic associations and literary tropes, in addition to providing outstanding entertainment value, is used here to create a coherent, dystopian vision of a future that is, quite unexpectedly, already here.
