This play by the artistic duo Rubin/Janiczak is based on motifs from the classic novel “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov. But it isn’t a faithful theatrical adaptation of the adventures of Woland and his entourage from the book. Instead, the audience is invited to take a seat by a monumental round table and actively participate in the dramaturgy of the scenes. Questions are prepared for them that demand definite yes or no answers through an electronic voting system, but the actors also often take them out of their comfort zones. The series of performative actions are not empty provocations—they are precisely arranged interventions in the shape of modern-day Polish reality. Further questions uncover bourgeois mindsets and the wide-ranging effects of oppressive cultural and political norms. Meanwhile the theatrical machinery, once it gets started, leads to a cruel, ironic and witty vivisection of the relatively young Polish democracy.

Wiktor Rubin and Jolanta Janiczak carefully design their piece to create a performative platform that enables the deconstruction of mechanisms that produce the impression of democracy while also getting perverse amusement from intentionally confusing their audience. There is a sudden twist in the finale, and anti-illusory, anti-psychological scenes unexpectedly take on a brand new form, offering the viewers the theatrical experience that they most desire, fulfilling the promise of the play’s title.
