Małgorzata Warsicka’s play, created at the Ludwik Solski Theatre in Tarnów, is a fascinating monodrama performed by Matylda Baczyńska. The young actress is confronted with the dense and semantically, and linguistically complicated phrasing typical of Juliusz Słowacki’s texts. His The Spirit King, based on a legend taken from Plato’s Republic, is a multi-layered narrative poem, filled with metaphysical dilemmas, mystical visions and hard-to-decipher symbolism. At the same time, the bard explains his historical/philosophical concepts here: showing their impact and resonance in modern times is the overriding theme explored by the director and the actress. Reciting violent, bloody lines, Baczyńska juxtaposes gruesome images with amazing lightness, wit and irony, creating a spectacular show, which not only breathes fresh air into the monodrama formula, but also creates a new model for staging Słowacki’s writings.
