A Technical Question unassumingly engages the audience’s emotions, making its main theme “what is usually hidden from view”. Michał Buszewicz’s play tells the story of the people who are normally only seen backstage and don’t get their moment in the spotlight – the technical crew watching over each show. Jarosław Majzel, Janusz Rojek and Mirosław Wiśniewski abandon their regular jobs and duties at the Chamber Stage of the National Stary Theatre to share stories about their adventures. Stepping outside their institutionally assigned roles, which are mostly about carrying pieces of furniture and changing the props and set design, these three men become actors and the main focus for the audience. A Technical Question doesn’t simply expose the theatre’s seams; it actually gives a voice and creative control to the people who usually only do physical work. At the same time, Buszewicz and his technical team perversely and wittily present the mechanics of the labor itself, attempting to capture its dynamics, making us realize that it’s the crucial component in every artistic project.
