Anna Smolar’s play, produced by the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw, poses important questions about the status, meaning and significance of the titular phrase. The director, together with the playwright, Michał Buszewicz, reflects upon transience and ideological determinants of identity signifiers around “Jewishness” and the problems with acting in itself. Trapped in a never-ending rehearsal of the first scene, taken from an old, unfinished performance, the actors struggle with trying to make sense of the intricacies of their stories. The six performers dig deep into the past and make an attempt to explore the abyss of their memory, not only to establish their own identities but also to fulfill cultural and social expectations. Presenting fragments of their biographies, theatrical and stylized, as well as personal concerns and dilemmas about the past and the fear of the present, the titular Jewish actors depict multi-layered and individualized perspectives on the issues tackled by the show, which are centered around acting, cultural heritage, tradition and their influence on the modern world.
