Julia Marek’s play, produced by the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Theatre in Jelenia Góra, is based on a text by Szymon Bogacz. The playwright tells the story of an iconic figure of the 20th century – Jan Karski, who worked as a courier and messenger during World War II. He became famous for his connection with American president Franklin D. Roosevelt, and most of all because he’s said to have saved thousands of Jews. Later, Karski became a professor and university lecturer in the U.S., becoming a model “man of success”, and realizing the American Dream. Unreal Story of Jan Karski is not, however, a faithful theatre adaptation of a modern hero’s biography, but rather a reflection on the Holocaust and its meaning in a post-memory era. The director plays a variety of formal and aesthetic games with Karski’s bio, encouraging the audience to re-think their own opinions about the past, revealing the shallowness of certain pop-culture images of turbulent historical times.
