Anna Karasińska’s play is the result of a program organized by TR Warszawa – “Teren TR”. As the director herself acknowledges, however, the project changed significantly during the rehearsals as a result of her meetings with the actors who participated in the program. As a consequence, the performance says more about contact with a particular place and the people who create it, but most of all it attempts to reveal the workings behind modern art in the age of media. Karasińska creates a peculiar theatrical situation where the actors attempt to play themselves as well as other people’s ideas about who they are. In this world, fiction is mixed with reality, gossip collides with cultural stereotypes and the lines spoken onstage multiply the incarnations embodied by the four performers. Juxtaposing a variety of narratives, Ewelina’s Crying presents the fragmented identities of the actors/characters, devoid of a stable core, inviting the audience to have fun putting all the elements together.
