With the play she directed at the Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk, Ewelina Marciniak continues to follow her unique artistic path. Like in her previous work, her focus here centers on femininity and what defines it, not so much from a biological perspective as from a cultural one. Based on the renowned novel of the same title by the Noble Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek, Women as Lovers involves the audience in a variety of seemingly childish and innocent little games that gradually reveal their cruelty. This is not only to make us aware of the oppressiveness of traditional power structures associated with male dominance and the capitalist system, but also to carry out a vivisection of human feelings and emotions, trapped in a dense grid of discourses and behavioral patterns. The battle between femininity and masculinity in Marciniak’s show does not only lead, however, to dismantling various gender traps, but also makes the viewers realize the strength of omnipresent cultural clichés, partially responsible for social and gender inequalities. And this, combined with a ruthless economy and the power of money, could turn out to have fatal repercussions — not only for theatrical and literary characters
