Although it seems surreal at first sight, Magda Szpecht’s play, which has been showcased and has won awards at a numerous international theatre festivals, is inspired by a true story. In the 1960s NASA carried out investigations to test the possibility of communication between humans and dolphins. One of them was a secret experiment led by doctor John Lilly in a mysterious laboratory somewhere in the Caribbean. One of its participants was Margaret Howe Lovatt, a young woman in her twenties, who lived in a special house for six months with a dolphin named Peter. The girl managed to establish an intimate bond with the mammal and she spent time not only playing with him but also teaching him English. But when the experiment ended, Peter, feeling abandoned and miserable, committed suicide. Szpecht uses archival materials and recordings of dolphin voices as well as actor improvisations around this fascinating scientific tale. dolphin_who_loved_me proves that in an era of post-humanism, we have to not only accept the fluidity of boundaries between people and animals, but also understand that in some cases animals can see and feel better than human beings.
