Michał Zadara, who in his past work investigated myths around Polish identity and patriotism, this time takes on Fryderyk Chopin’s musical heritage. Both piano concertos in E minor and F minor, which are the basis of presentation, are performed here by an orchestra without a piano. The piano parts are replaced by monologues spoken by an actress, Barbara Wysocka. Accompanied by Simfonietta Cracovia, conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk, the actress precisely re-creates the score, trying to, through her verbal process, establish a kind of a substitute for the sounds of a piano. The script of this unusual show is based on interviews with pianists, pieces of philosophical, musicological and theoretical texts as well as Chopin’s letters. It is worth stating that the radical and risky experiment undertaken by Zadara is not supposed to diminish the value of a piano as a musical instrument, but rather to present the work of the Polish composer from a radically different perspective. Wysocka’s interdisciplinary performance draws attention to elements of Chopin’s composition that have not been explored yet. Therefore, the show itself, with is structure resembling a concerto, becomes a commentary on the composer’s body of work and at the same time serves as an excuse to discuss the reception of music in general.
