The first-ever staging of Elfriede Jelinek’s play at the Polish Theatre in Wrocław, directed by Paweł Miśkiewicz, perfectly re-creates the micro-universe of the Austrian Noble Prize Winner. There are autobiographical elements in the text: poignant, razor-sharp monologues on everyday and symbolic violence are juxtaposed with memories of Jelinek’s father, a patient at an asylum, and the stories of Natascha Kampusch and Elisabeth Fritzl – victims of male sexual desire. The director divides the text amongst six actresses, who recite their lines to the rhythm of a drum and live music by the band incarNations. The band’s singer Maja Kleszcz, who performs Jelinek’s dialogue, also serves as one of the actresses. She’s joined on stage by an amazing all-female cast from the Polish Theatre, led by Ewa Skibińska and Halina Rasiakówna, who direct their poignant and linguistically adventurous tales at the audience with great intensity. The stories and the various alter egos of the Austrian writer make for a wild and unstoppable stream of consciousness, which Miśkiewicz directs in a spare, minimal style, making each sentence carry a powerful charge of content and meaning.
Inspired by Franz Schubert’s song cycle, the play depicts not only the marginalization of women and their entanglement in a sexist and patriarchal culture, but also expresses a romantic longing for fulfilment, a key theme in the musical piece. The six incarnations of Jelinek, bravely and vividly performed, reveal a world filled with inner complications, dark phenomena and ideological traps as well as irony and wit, beyond the linearity and logic of cause and effect.
