The second scene of a stand-up play by Jacek Kozłowski, made in Wałbrzych. Wisława Szymborska, Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz and Hanka Bielicka: selected from a rich landscape of national mythology and symbolism, these human statues begin to speak up. Three actors, three heroes and three monologues. Crossing the boundaries of decency and good taste, biographical details are used to launch a precise mechanism of parody and an ironic take on matters considered to be “holy”. The numerous jokes and stories told by the stand-ups paint a sharp and irreverent portrait of “Polish Super Heroes”. On the one hand this establishes intimate contact with figures relevant to the national culture; on the other it stripsthem of pathos, solemnity and sublimity – certainly favorite features in the reservoir of Polish historical imagery. Szymborska, Rymkiewicz, and Bielicka are portrayed as depressed. The experience of being disappointed and bored with the world can be found in three individual, isolated and fully formed linguistic spaces. At the same time the typical styles of each of the three artists are emblematic of disparate approaches to diagnosing and describing the national reality. Each of these models is presented with an ironic twist and serves as an excuse for having a lot of fun with the collective imagination and cultural norms – particularly the inflated slogans of patriotism.
