Marcin Liber’s play that premiered at Szaniawski Drama Theatre in Walbrzych is, according to the director himself, the culmination of many years devoted to exploring issues around Polish faith. Jarosław Murawski’s rhymed text refers to the Good Friday tradition of tempting Judas, cultivated in a Silesian town called Skoczowo. This theme becomes the basis for creating a multi-threaded story about the sources of Polish religiosity, its commercialization, ideological implications, bigotry and fanaticism. It’s worth emphasizing that the director treats the various environments and subcultures he touches upon with detachment, without taking a side, critiquing all kinds of radicalism. His satire is in fact pointed at right-wing conservatives, Jesus-freaks but also at anarchist organizations from Poznań. Liber stirs up a hornet’s nest, making an attempt to tame hysterical fanatics who do not care about the metaphysical aspect of faith but only see it as a weapon in the battle for political power and influence.
